What Actually Happens in Your First Therapy Session
(So You Know What to Expect)
If you've been thinking about starting therapy but haven't quite made the call yet, there's a good chance part of what's holding you back is not knowing what you're walking into. That's completely normal, and it's one of the things we hear most often from new clients at CPGR.
The unknown can feel intimidating. So we want to take that off the table.
Here's an honest, straightforward look at what your first session with us actually looks like, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Before you even sit down
When you arrive at CPGR, you'll be welcomed into a calm, private waiting area. There's no clinical buzz, no crowded waiting room. If there's any brief paperwork to finish (some clients complete this ahead of time online), you'll have a few quiet minutes to do so before your therapist comes to greet you.
We know that walking through the door for the first time takes courage. Our team is aware of that, and we want your first impression to feel human and authentic, not institutional.
The first session isn't about diving deep
This is probably the most important thing to understand: your first session is not a deep dive. It's more of a getting-to-know-you conversation. We want this to be comfortable enough where it feels like you can make a connection with your therapist!
Your therapist's main goal is to understand who you are, what's brought you to therapy right now, and what you're hoping to get from it. They're not going to push you somewhere you're not ready to go. You won't be asked to relive difficult memories or confront your biggest fears on day one.
Think of it less like a medical appointment and more like a thoughtful conversation with someone whose whole job is to listen without judgment.
What your therapist will want to know
Your therapist will ask some open-ended questions to get a picture of your life and what's on your mind. These might include things like:
What's been going on that brought you here?
How long have you been feeling this way?
Is there anything specific you'd like to work on, or do you just know something needs to change?
Have you been to therapy before?
There are no right or wrong answers. You don't need to have everything figured out or arrive with a clear "problem statement." Many people come to their first session simply knowing they're not okay and wanting support. That's more than enough to start.
You're also welcome to ask questions of your own. In fact, we encourage it. First sessions work both ways. Again, we want you to feel comfortable working with your therapist.
What you don't have to do
You don't have to share everything. You don't have to cry (though it's fine if you do). You don't have to pretend to be more okay, or less okay, than you actually are. And you absolutely don't have to commit to anything on the spot.
Therapy is a relationship, and like any relationship, it takes a bit of time to establish trust. Your therapist understands that. The first session is about beginning that process, not completing it.
By the end of the hour
As the session wraps up, your therapist will usually offer a brief reflection on what you've shared and talk through what working together might look like going forward. They might suggest a general direction or approach based on what you've discussed, and you'll have a chance to share how the session felt for you.
If you want to book a follow-up, you can, but there's no pressure. Some people come back the following week, others take a few days to sit with it first. Either is fine.
A note on fit
At CPGR, we want therapy to actually work for you, and that means the relationship with your therapist matters. If after your first session you don't feel quite right with the person you've seen, please tell us. Finding the right fit isn't failure; it's part of the process, and we'll do what we can to make sure you end up with someone who genuinely suits you.
Ready to take the first step?
The hardest part, honestly, is making the appointment. Once you're in the room, most people find it a lot less daunting than they imagined.
If you have any questions before booking — about what to expect, what we treat, or anything else — you're welcome to reach out to us directly. We're happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.
In fact, we want this to be a comfortable and easy process for you. Our therapists are warm, experienced, and committed to making you feel safe from the very first session. To do so, we always offer a free 15-minute consultation with a therapist to make sure it’s a good fit for you before you get started in therapy. Reach out to us today to schedule that consultation!
